Clients often seek solutions to reduce acne scars, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles, laxity, or hyperpigmentation. One evidence-based approach that continues to gain recognition in aesthetic medicine is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), also known as microneedling.

This treatment leverages the skin’s natural healing mechanisms to stimulate collagen and elastin production, promoting smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

How does Collagen Induction Therapy work?

Collagen Induction Therapy a.k.a microneedling is grounded in the skin’s innate ability to repair itself. Using a professional-grade microneedling device, controlled micro-injuries are created on the skin’s surface.

This triggers a cascade of biological responses, including the release of growth factors, neocollagenesis, and elastin synthesis. Over time, this process enhances structural support, improves texture, and rejuvenates the overall complexion.

What is a Dr. Pen Canada Microneedling Pen?

Dr. Pen Canada supplies a range of professional microneedling pens designed to optimize skin health through controlled stimulation. These handheld devices use sterile, single-use cartridges and variable depth settings to deliver safe, effective, and customizable treatments.

Common indications include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Skin laxity and uneven tone

  • Enlarged pores

  • Acne scars and stretch marks

  • Hyperpigmentation

The device is gently moved across the skin in linear and cross-hatch patterns, creating thousands of microchannels to initiate repair.

Benefits of Microneedling and Collagen Stimulation

The clinical benefits of Microneedling extend beyond visible rejuvenation:

  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles through dermal remodelling

  • Improvement in pigmentation irregularities and overall skin tone

  • Diminished acne scars and stretch marks via collagen restructuring

  • Enhanced topical absorption, with microchannels allowing targeted serums to penetrate more effectively

This synergy between mechanical stimulation and topical delivery helps maximize treatment outcomes.

With adjustable needle depths and speed settings, microneedling can be safely performed across multiple areas:

  • Face

  • Neck and décolleté

  • Dorsal hands

  • Abdomen, buttocks, and thighs

These regions are particularly prone to age-related changes, making them common targets for CIT.

Candidate Considerations

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for many clients; however, it is not appropriate for all individuals. A thorough consultation and medical history should always be conducted prior to treatment. Contraindications include:

  • Sunburn

  • Use of photosensitizing medications, such as isotretinoin

  • Autoimmune conditions, including scleroderma

  • Recent use of active skincare ingredients (e.g., retinoids) within the past 3 days

  • Current use of prescribed topical creams or ointments

  • Active viral infections, including herpes simplex or cold sores

  • History of cancer or clients undergoing chemotherapy

  • Presence of warts in the treatment area

  • Bacterial or fungal infections

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of keloid scarring or predisposition to raised scars

Careful assessment of these factors helps ensure client safety and optimizes treatment outcomes.

Treatment Timeline and Results

A microneedling treatment will typically take you 30-60 minutes to complete, depending on how quickly you move. As you get more experienced, you may be able to complete the treatment faster.

A topical anaesthetic cream is recommended before microneedling, and this generally takes an additional 20-30 minutes to take effect.

Treatment Timeline and Results

  • Session length: 30–60 minutes, plus 20–30 minutes for topical anaesthetic application.

  • Treatment frequency: 3–5 initial sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance every 6–8 weeks.

  • Results: Initial radiance can be seen within one week, with progressive improvements in texture and tone over 4–6 weeks. Long-term collagen remodelling continues for up to 12 months post-treatment.

Downtime and Recovery

Post-procedure, clients may experience:

  • Immediate erythema/redness or mild swelling (similar to a mild sunburn)

  • Temporary tightness or sensitivity to touch

  • Mild flaking or dryness lasting 3–5 days due to accelerated cellular turnover that microneedling triggers.

These responses are expected and typically resolve quickly with appropriate aftercare.
