Microneedling is a clinically validated anti-aging treatment that promotes skin rejuvenation, improves visible signs of aging, and enhances hydration at a deeper level.

This guide breaks down how microneedling works, its key benefits, and step-by-step best practices to support safe and effective treatment delivery.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), stimulates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms to restore a smoother, firmer, and more youthful appearance.

Collagen—an essential structural protein—declines with age, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity. Collagen loss can also occur from acne scarring, stretch marks, or trauma.

By creating controlled microchannels with sterile microneedles, microneedling enhances topical penetration (e.g., Hyaluronic Acid serums) while activating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. This process strengthens the dermis and visibly improves texture, tone, and resilience.

Studies have found microneedling to be a safe and effective way to rejuvenate the complexion and slow the progression of the visible signs of ageing.

Why Perform Microneedling?

The benefits of microneedling can be dramatic for rejuvenating and refreshing the skin. It provides significant clinical benefits for patients seeking rejuvenation. Indications include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scarring

  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven tone

  • Enlarged pores

  • Stretch marks

  • Skin laxity

  • Dullness or dehydration

For many clients, microneedling is a cornerstone treatment that optimizes long-term skin health and delivers visible, natural-looking results.

Contraindications and Precautions

While generally safe across all skin types, microneedling is not suitable for every client. Possible short-term effects include erythema, swelling, or transient flaking.

Avoid treatment in the following cases:

  • Sunburn

  • Use of photosensitizing medications, such as isotretinoin

  • Autoimmune conditions, including scleroderma

  • Recent use of active skincare ingredients (e.g., retinoids) within the past 3 days

  • Current use of prescribed topical creams or ointments

  • Active viral infections, including herpes simplex or cold sores

  • History of cancer or clients undergoing chemotherapy

  • Presence of warts in the treatment area

  • Bacterial or fungal infections

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of keloid scarring or predisposition to raised scars

Always complete a thorough consultation to recognize risks and confirm eligibility.

What You’ll Need for Microneedling?

For hygiene and sterility:

  • Surface disinfectant solution

  • Clean towels

  • Sterile gauze

  • Antiseptic alcohol wipes

  • Disposable medical-grade gloves

For treatment:

  • Hair tie or headband

  • Gentle cleanser

  • Optional: 5% Lidocaine topical anesthetic

  • Occlusive wrap (to accelerate numbing)

  • Hydrating serum (e.g., Hyaluronic Acid)

  • Microneedling pen and sterile, single-use cartridges

How to perform Microneedling

Preparation

  • Sanitize environment: Disinfect all surfaces and prepare a clean workstation. Secure hair and don disposable gloves.

  • Double cleanse: Thoroughly remove impurities with a gentle cleanser. Toner may be applied if appropriate.

  • Optional numbing: Apply topical anesthetic 20–30 minutes prior. Occlusive wrap may accelerate absorption. Remove with antiseptic wipes and cleanse again before proceeding.

  • Apply serum: Use Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and reduce drag. Work in small sections to maintain serum hydration.

  • Set up device: Insert cartridge, adjust depth and speed based on treatment area, and activate the device.

Treatment

  1. Divide the face into sections.

  2. Use crisscross passes for larger zones (cheeks, forehead) and circular motions for smaller contours (nose, perioral area).

  3. After treatment, rinse gently with lukewarm water if desired. Immediately reapply Hyaluronic Acid serum for hydration and comfort.

Post-Treatment Aftercare

24 hours after:

  • Cleanse with a mild cleanser; apply a fragrance-free moisturizer.

  • Avoid actives (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C), scrubs, or toners.

  • Expect mild erythema, swelling, or petechiae. Minimize irritation by maintaining hydration.

  • Avoid sweating, swimming, or makeup. Apply broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen.

48 hours after:

  • Gentle exfoliation (if tolerated) may be introduced to remove flaking skin. Continue hydration.

3–5 days after:

  • Maintain high-protection sunscreen use.

  • Focus on hydrating, soothing formulations. Continue to avoid actives and exfoliants.

7+ days after:

  • Resume regular skincare routine if the skin has fully recovered.
