Microneedling is a clinically recognized procedure that requires careful preparation to optimize results and ensure client safety. For professionals, setting the stage properly before beginning a session is just as important as the treatment itself. A well-prepared environment, sterilized equipment, and properly conditioned skin all contribute to both client comfort and treatment efficacy.

Below are five essential steps every licensed professional should follow before initiating a microneedling session.

1. Prepare the Skin

Ensuring the skin is in an optimal state prior to treatment is crucial for safe and effective outcomes.

  • Avoid certain skincare products: Discontinue the use of retinoids, acid-based formulas, and topical exfoliants at least 3–7 days before treatment to minimize irritation, dryness, or hypersensitivity.

  • Limit sun exposure and hair removal treatments: Avoid direct sun exposure for 24 hours prior to treatment. For body areas, clients should not shave, wax, or undergo laser hair removal on the treatment site during the week before their session.

  • Medication guidance: Anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, Advil) can interfere with the healing response essential for collagen induction. Clients should avoid these medications for at least three days prior to treatment but only under the direction of a healthcare provider.

  • Contraindications: Do not perform microneedling on clients with active acne, psoriasis, eczema, hives, cold sores, keloids or skin infections. Treating compromised skin may worsen inflammation or spread infection.

2. Prepare the Equipment

Ensure all necessary materials are ready before beginning the procedure:

  • Fully charged Dr. Pen microneedling device

  • Sterile, single-use cartridge suited to the client’s concerns

  • Accessories such as gloves, hair ties, clean towels, containers, and optional numbing cream

  • 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol for sterilization

  • Professional-grade hydrating serums, such as hyaluronic acid

The workstation must be clean, organized, and sanitized prior to treatment to prevent contamination.

3. Sterilize the Microneedling Tool

Sterility is non-negotiable in any professional setting. Cartridges should be soaked in 70%+ isopropyl alcohol solution or sprayed thoroughly for several minutes before use, then allowed to air dry. Proper sterilization minimizes infection risk and upholds professional treatment standards.

4. Double Cleanse the Skin

Client skin must be thoroughly cleansed before microneedling. A double cleanse with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser is recommended, using a silicone brush if needed to avoid irritation. Hair should be secured with a tie or headband.

If numbing cream is used, it should be applied after cleansing and left on for approximately 20 minutes before being removed completely. The area can then be prepped with 60% alcohol and purified water to ensure full readiness.

5. Apply a Hydrating Serum

Prior to beginning treatment, apply a hydrating serum to act as a glide medium and enhance treatment results. Hyaluronic acid serums are strongly recommended, as they lubricate the skin while amplifying hydration and supporting dermal recovery. Peptides, ceramides, and EGF-based serums are also excellent options.

Active serums, such as Vitamin C, should be avoided during treatment to reduce irritation.

Final Thoughts

Microneedling preparation is essential for optimizing safety, comfort, and outcomes. By following this five-step protocol, licensed professionals can ensure smoother, firmer, and more radiant skin for their clients while maintaining the highest standard of care.

Consistency remains key—while visible results may appear after a single session, treatments should be spaced every 4–6 weeks to allow complete dermal healing and maximize long-term benefits.
