Below are five essential steps every licensed professional should follow before initiating a microneedling session.

1. Prepare the Skin

Ensuring the skin is in an optimal state prior to treatment is crucial for safe and effective outcomes.

• Avoid certain skincare products: Discontinue the use of retinoids, acid-based formulas, and topical exfoliants at least 3–7 days before treatment to minimize irritation, dryness, or hypersensitivity.

• Limit sun exposure and hair removal treatments: Avoid direct sun exposure for 24 hours prior to treatment. For body areas, clients should not shave, wax, or undergo laser hair removal on the treatment site during the week before their session.

• Medication guidance: Anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, Advil) can interfere with the healing response essential for collagen induction. Clients should avoid these medications for at least three days prior to treatment but only under the direction of a healthcare provider.
