What Needle Depth Should Be Used for Microneedling?

Choosing the Right Needle Size

Selecting the correct needle length is essential for achieving safe and effective microneedling outcomes. The appropriate size depends on the treatment objective—whether the goal is to optimize serum absorption, improve overall skin texture, or address more advanced concerns such as deep wrinkles, laxity, or scarring.

As a best practice, always begin with shorter needle lengths, particularly when introducing microneedling to clients. Progression to longer lengths can be considered once tolerance and comfort are established.

Recommended Needle Depths by Indication

  • Serum absorption (excluding retinol-based serums): 0.25 mm

  • Scarring: 1.0 mm – 1.5 mm

  • Hyperpigmentation: 0.25 mm – 1.0 mm

  • Loose skin and photoaging (sun damage): 0.5 mm – 1.5 mm

  • Stretch marks: 1.5 mm – 2.5 mm

  • Uneven skin tone and textural concerns: 0.5 mm – 1.0 mm

  • Fine to deeper lines and wrinkles: 0.5 mm – 1.5 mm

How Often?

Another common question is, "how often should I be microneedling?" Treatment intervals must be adjusted according to needle depth, as deeper penetration requires more time for dermal recovery.

  • 0.25 mm: every 2 weeks

  • 0.5 mm: every 3–4 weeks

  • 1.0 mm: every 3–4 weeks

  • 1.5 mm: every 3–4 weeks

  • 2.0–2.5 mm: every 6 weeks (reserved for clinical use only and not recommended for at-home treatments due to safety considerations).

Microneedling is a versatile procedure, but results depend heavily on customizing needle depth and treatment frequency to the client’s unique skin condition and goals. Licensed professionals are best positioned to evaluate skin health, establish treatment plans, and determine the most appropriate microneedling protocol. Refer to Needle Depth Guide
