Fine lines, wrinkles, and other visible signs of aging are concerns many clients seek to address through professional treatments. Microneedling—also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)—remains a trusted solution for skin rejuvenation, but many clients want to know what to expect after the procedure. This guide outlines the treatment experience, downtime, and aftercare essentials to help practitioners optimize client outcomes.

Is microneedling invasive?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses ultra-fine needles to create hundreds of microscopic punctures in the epidermis. These punctures, or microchannels, stimulate the body’s natural healing response, accelerating cell turnover and boosting collagen and elastin production. As a result, skin concerns such as wrinkles, scars, acne marks, and pigmentation can be effectively minimized.

Is microneedling painful?

Tiny puncture marks to the top layer of skin might sound unpleasant, but microneedling is a relatively fast process and virtually painless, as topical numbing cream is generally used with each treatment.

Some people may choose to microneedle without using numbing cream, however we generally recommend it to make the treatment more comfortable.

What will the skin look like after microneedling?

Immediately post-treatment, the skin appears red and may show pinpoint bleeding (petechiae). Mild swelling and faint bruising are also possible, particularly in delicate areas such as the periocular region. These responses are expected and indicate the initiation of the skin’s repair process.

What will the skin feel like after microneedling?

In the days following treatment, the skin may feel slightly rough or textured due to the presence of microchannels. Clients may also notice faint visible marks. These effects are temporary and will subside as the skin heals, leaving it smoother and more refined.

What is the downtime of microneedling?

Microneedling involves minimal downtime. Redness and swelling typically resolve within 12–24 hours, transitioning to a pink tone as inflammation subsides. Mild sensitivity may persist for up to 48 hours, making aftercare critical to recovery.

Aftercare Recommendations

First 24 hours

  • Cleanse with a gentle, non-irritating formula.

  • Apply a nourishing, fragrance-free moisturizer.

  • Avoid active ingredients such as Vitamin C, retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs.

  • Do not exercise, swim, or apply makeup.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum, mineral-based SPF daily.

48 hours after

  • Gentle exfoliation of dry or flaking skin can be introduced if tolerated.

  • Continue hydrating and moisturizing both morning and night.

3–5 days post-treatment

  • Maintain daily high-protection sunscreen.

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure.

  • Continue to focus on hydration while avoiding actives.

7+ days post-treatment

  • Clients can safely return to their regular skincare regimen.

When to Schedule the Next Microneedling Session

Although visible improvement is often seen within days, true benefits emerge over the full skin-cell turnover cycle (4–6 weeks). Treatments can safely be repeated every 4–6 weeks, depending on individual goals. For long-term maintenance, professionals may recommend ongoing sessions at the same interval.

When Clients Have Questions

Uncertainty about treatment candidacy, aftercare, or timelines is common. Licensed professionals play a critical role in guiding clients through the process and personalizing recommendations. Encouraging open dialogue ensures patients feel supported and informed throughout their microneedling journey.
